This story is about a 23-year old boy having some big dreams who find himself capable to achieve it but lack of verbal communication skills come as a barrier in its path. He is excellent at non- verbal part in academic as well non-academic aspect but in case of verbal communication, he can’t portray his thoughts efficiently. His mild stammer and fear of being judged about it contribute hugely in this skill lack but he believe this stammer can be cured through practice. He knows the importance of communication because no matter how much knowledgeable or intelligent one is, if he/she can’t portray it, so it is of no use.

So, I am Mashal and the story you just read is about me. There is an immense need to improve my verbal communication because my professional life goals would require it, personal goals require it as well though. Therefore, this week, I decided to work on it and started from my very immediate near people, my family. I presented a topic in front of them just to get started. I didn’t experience anxiety as such due to my closeness with them but I may feel anxious presenting it to other groups. However, this perception shouldn’t come in my way while speaking to other groups, I should be prepare to give my level best.

From this week onwards, I will present in group form in front of my friends, extended family members, and colleagues one after another in coming 6 weeks respectively with this approach that if I get stuck because of my stammer, I should not feel demotivated but rather continue my journey of improvement with the same zest. I will cite a quote of Imran Khan here and that is “It is not defeat that destroys you, it is being demoralized by defeat that destroy you.”

After 6 weeks, I would have improved enough to talk to people hopefully but I will continue practice this skill side by side with my daily life chores.
